Wing mirrors

The electric-adjust mirrors are a brilliant piece of design, and shouldn’t give any trouble.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the manually-adjusted ones. The adjusting cables are prone to seizing. Here’s how to get them moving again:

  1. Remove the mirror glass.
Tip the mirror glass up and back as far as it’ll go. If it’s seized, ‘force’ it (carefully, of course…). Looking up from under the mirror, you should be able to see a serrated bit of plastic on the back of the mirror glass. Facing the glass, push the serrated bit about 5mm to the right with a screwdriver. This will release the mirror glass.
  2. Remove the mirror complete.
Inside the car, pull off the mirror trim cover. The mirror is held in place with two screws and a ring nut. You may need to remove the door trim panel to extract the lower screw.
  3. Dismantle the mirror.
Remove the screws holding the mirror “shell” to the aluminium frame. I’m not sure how to seperate the shell correctly – mine fell apart after a slight argument with another car. I guess brute force will do. Remove the three screws that hold the adjuster knob in place, and remove the adjuster from its aluminium surround.
  4. Fix it.
You should see three badly rusted control wires. Use penetrating oil to free them off. If you wish, the wires can be detached to make this easier. One of the wires had snapped off on my mirror. I managed to fix it by removing ~13mm from the cable sheath and soldering a new nipple onto the end of the cable. Once it’s all freed off, lube it properly and reassemble. If you ‘broke’ the mirror shell, now’s the time to go find some glue…
You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.
