Steering column

When was the last time you adjusted your steering column free play? Yes, really!

My car’s steering has always been a little vague. I put that down to the mileage, and never looked any further, mainly because I didn’t fancy having to pay for a new steering rack. The steering column “knocked” over rough surfaces, too.
Anyway, I needn’t have worried…

The column is adjustable, as you probably know. To allow the column to move in and out, there is a sliding joint at the base of the column. You can see it by looking underneath the dashboard. It contains ball bearings to allow for smooth operation. What isn’t so obvious is that the joint is adjustable for free play. It works like this:

The above diagram is very crude, but you get the idea.
Basically, tighten the adjuster nut until the free play disappears. Check that the column still adjusts freely afterwards – in other words, don’t overtighten the adjuster!
