Cam chain adjustment
Nice easy job, but potentially risky, so be careful. It’s a good idea to set the tension at every service.
WARNING: Never try to set the tension without turning the engine. You could end up with a slack chain, and do a lot of damage.
Hayne’s method:
There is a possible danger here that some slack could be introduced, especially if the engine misfires.
- Run the engine up to temperature, and let it idle at 1000-1200 RPM.
- Slacken the adjuster release bolt. Facing the engine, it’s on the front left hand side of the head: Note: Be careful! Keep well clear of the HT leads and moving belts.
- Run the engine for a minute or so, to let the adjuster spring take up any slack.
- Tighten the adjuster bolt.
Alfa Romeo factory method:
Thanks to Ram for this info.
- Run the engine up to temperature, then stop the engine.
- Slacken the adjuster release bolt.
- Select 5th gear.
- Push the car forward to rotate the engine one revolution. (surely this should be two revolutions?)
- Tighten the adjuster bolt, making sure that the vehicle does not roll back.
